Restructuring of the United Nations

The United Nations was established in 1945 to
maintain international peace and security, foster friendly relations among
nations, promote social progress, and uphold human rights.
If we look at the achievements of the United
Nations in the last 80 years, some commendable efforts come to mind in the
areas of Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (NTBT) and Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban
Treaty (CTBT), Universal Declaration of Human Rights, protection of the rights
of children throughout the world, assistance and protection to refugees and
displaced persons, eradication of diseases like smallpox and the fight against
polio and malaria, etc.
But nowadays the conflicts between many
countries, spread of terrorism, increasing smuggling of narcotics and
increasing demand for destructive weapons are vivid proofs of the failure of
the United Nations.
The main reasons for this failure of the United
Nations are lack of resources and control of a handful of powerful nations over
it.
If the United Nations is to be made effective,
then its entire structure needs to be reorganized. The following suggestions
should be considered in this regard: -
• Permanent membership of the Security Council
and their veto power to be abolished
• All member countries together elect members of
an eleven-member executive committee. Its term should be two years. Members of
any country will not be eligible to contest the executive election again for
the next five years. This executive committee will take decisions by majority
• All member countries should give one or two
percent of their annual income to the United Nations as a grant
• All countries to maintain police force only
for internal security and crime control. The United Nations will have control
over all armies and military weapons. International security and crime control
will be under the United Nations. All countries will transfer their defines
budget to the United Nations
• In the next five years, the United Nations
will eliminate all nuclear weapons in a proper manner. And will reorganize by
reducing the military strength to the required level. And will re-evaluate the
budget as per the need and determine the percentage of donation from each
country.
• Every quarter, the United Nations will present
information about its activities and future programs to the General Assembly
and seek guidance.
• Only those countries that accept all the above
conditions will be able to become members of the United Nations.
This type of reorganization will not only reduce
the defines budget of all countries considerably but will also help all
countries in improving
relations with their neighbouring countries.
Reduction in crime and improvement in social peace are expected.
